Credit unions emerged in the 1800's because of a void created when reputable lenders showed little interest in service the financial needs to the wage earner.  The birth of credit unions was founded around one simple idea--that people working together and pooling their savings can create a valuable credit resource not otherwise available to them. 

Because credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives, they can operate solely to meet the needs of their members.  This means that after expenses and required reserves have been met, the earnings of the credit union are returned to members in the form of dividends or added services.

Credit unions are governed by their members, for the benefit of the members, each having an equal voice in the operation of the credit union.  The membership annually elects unpaid, volunteer officers and directors who establish the policies under which the credit union will operate.  The credit union motto has always been

The First Choice Credit Union, Inc. was chartered in 1967 by a group of employees from the former AVCO New Idea Farm Equipment Company.  Since then, we have grown to serve 26 additional employee groups along with persons living, working, worshiping, or attending school in Mercer County.  Currently, over 2,200 members utilize our services and we have over $10 million in assets.  We continue to be a growing cooperative and follow the philosophy of
